Anointing

Suffering, illness and frailty are part of the human condition. The Sacrament of Anointing, one of the seven sacraments of the Church, is part of the Church’s healing ministry and pastoral care of those who are sick and frail. Christ always showed compassion and mercy to those in need, never condemnation.

Christian faith helps the community to grapple with the difficulties and mystery of suffering. Those who are seriously ill seek the special help of God’s grace and the support of the Christian community. The Christian community, as the face of Christ, supports the sick by their presence and prayer, offering comfort in times of pain and anxiety.

The sacramental ritual is a sign of love and the compassion of Christ. The forehead and hands of the sick and frail are gently marked with the blessed Oil of the Sick in the sign of the cross. Together with the laying on of hands and prayers, the whole person is sustained and strengthened.

It may be celebrated during Mass, or at a home, hospital or other facility, whenever there is a need. Parish communities may celebrate general Masses of Anointing. They also pray for those who are absent, through sickness, at the Sunday Mass in the Prayer of the Faithful.

The sacrament is not conferred after a person has died. Following a return to health, the person is encouraged to participate in a Mass of Thanksgiving for the blessings received.
